NATURAL DYE WEEKEND IMMERSION

In the words of Errol van de Werdt, Netherlands Textile Museum director, "Like foragers look for food, ecologically-conscious designers hunt and gather organic ingredients creating a colourful language tinted for today's greener times. Environmentalism is interwoven with sustenance.” Jo Fowles sincerely looks forward to taking you down the very long and deeply beautiful rabbit hole that is natural dying with local and Indian natural dyes to create a beautiful technical file full of samples for both yarn and fabric.

THE CLASS

This once a year weekend class includes mordants, modifiers and resist techniques explored in depth. Jo’s full weekend class studies will include learning about protein and cellulose fibres and their unique properties. Full swatch packs will be provided for all sampling and recording and you will have 14 hours of pure dying immersion. You will create an extensive dye journal of beautiful natural colour and gain a solid understanding of natural dyes, as well as a unique one-off dyed item. This weekend workshop is a chance to build further and create your own small project as the curriculum also includes simple shibori techniques, overdyeing and natural bleaching processes to further enhance and personalise work. You will be working with premium ethical dyes from India and you will come away with knowledge of how to mordant fabric, use an extract and utilise exhaust baths and we will demonstrate how to use modifier baths to alter the colour of samples.

Additional items will be available to purchase.

WHAT YOU WILL GET:

  • Ring bound folder for samples
  • Technical file data sheets
