ONE DAY NATURAL DYE COLOUR EXPLORATION - SYDNEY 27 OCTOBER 2018
It all started when Jo Fowles showed Megan Morton the results of her Mother’s Day bouquet as a piece of dyed cotton, silk and cashmere. "Goosebumpy" and "ridiculously beautiful" are two of the memories from when Megan saw (and felt) Jo’s sampler and related data dye sheets.
This full day is devoted to natural dye and vegetal colour and how to use sourced colour from local surrounds. The day will allow you to immerse yourself in the natural dye process and its glorious results - we will work with flowers, turmeric, onions, tea, coffee, avocado pips (I know right?) and other natural ingredients we may forage locally prior to the workshop.
The nuances of natural dye will blow your mind and you will spend the day creating 4 - 5 of your own natural colours. You will learn about fabric preparation, mordanting fabrics, create a dye sample swatch book as well as make your own scarf. “The real joy of the day will be discovering your own low impact naturally derived dyes,” says Jo, “and we will work on silk, cotton and wools and watch the wonder of onion skins, eucalyptus and natural materials to create your own sampler book.” Additional outcomes of your 7 hour day will also include a custom dye data sheet, notebook and a solid understanding of natural dye to build your own practice as a natural dyer.
The morning is dedicated to learning about dyes and preparing fabric for dyeing and in the afternoon we will dye samples and create a final sample library for future reference.
